History of Gua Sha Massage
Gua Sha is an ancient Eastern technique that dates back over 2,000 years. It originates from Traditional Chinese Medicine and was used for disease prevention, working with meridians, the lymphatic system, and a person’s emotional state. The name literally translates as “to scrape away all the bad,” reflecting the main goal of the technique — to release stagnation, activate circulation, and support balance in the body.
Over time, the technique evolved and expanded, and today Gua Sha is widely used in both cosmetology and therapeutic practices around the world.
What does Gua Sha massage provide?
Gua Sha body massage activates the body’s internal recovery processes. It improves blood circulation, stimulates lymphatic flow, relieves deep muscle tension, and restores natural body sensitivity. After the session, there is a feeling of lightness, warmth, and wholeness.
Types of Gua Sha Massage
At Soul&Body, we use several types of Gua Sha massage depending on the area being treated:
- Gua Sha for the back and shoulders — relieves muscle tension, reduces pain, and improves mobility.
- Gua Sha for the abdomen — supports digestion, helps with bloating and lymphatic stagnation.
- Gua Sha for legs and thighs — improves microcirculation, supports detoxification, and helps reduce swelling.
- Full-body Gua Sha — a comprehensive body treatment that activates regenerative processes on all levels.
- Facial Gua Sha — reduces puffiness, improves tone, and adds a healthy glow to the skin.
Who is Gua Sha massage suitable for?
Gua Sha massage is suitable for anyone who wants to care for their body gently yet deeply. It is often chosen by those who:
- experience muscle tension, fatigue, or stagnation in the body
- have a sedentary job or spend a lot of time in motion
- want to improve lymphatic flow, microcirculation, and overall well-being
- are looking for an alternative to intense massages or injection-based methods
- need detoxification, relaxation, and grounding
- want to restore body sensitivity, regain clarity, and replenish inner resources
It is also an excellent support for those in recovery, experiencing chronic fatigue, or feeling the need for a full “reset.”
Who should avoid Gua Sha massage?
- Active inflammatory conditions or high fever
- During flare-ups of chronic illnesses
- Blood clotting disorders or thrombophlebitis
- Pregnancy (individually, after consultation)
How is Gua Sha different from classic massage?
Gua Sha provides a deeper effect on tissues through the fascia, lymphatic system, and energy lines than traditional massage, working especially well with swelling, tension, and age-related skin changes. Instead of hands, special natural stone tools are used, allowing for precise and gentle stimulation.
Unlike classic massage, which focuses mainly on kneading muscles, Gua Sha concentrates on stimulating active points, lymphatic flow, and improving microcirculation. This massage not only relaxes but also helps release stagnation, refresh skin tone, and fill the body with lightness and warmth.
What does a Gua Sha session at SoulBody look like?
The session begins with a brief assessment of the body’s condition — we always adapt to individual needs and intentions. A natural massage oil is used to ensure smooth, gentle gliding of the Gua Sha tools.
During the massage, the therapist works with Gua Sha plates, guiding movements along the body’s lines to activate meridians, lymphatic flow, and muscle areas. After the session, the specialist gently removes excess oil with a towel.
*In areas of stagnation and tension, redness, petechiae (small red dots), or even minor bruising may appear (which are manifestations of “sha”). This is normal and indicates increased circulation.
Recommended course of sessions:
- A single session — for a deep reset
- A course of 1–2 times per week (5–10 sessions) — for lasting results
- Maintenance sessions — 1–2 times per month (as needed)
